"Growing up in the countryside in Sweden allowed me to have an intimate relationship with nature, the seasons and the rich history and folklore of the land. Our neighbours had a Viking burial mound in their yard, and in the field behind our garden the remains of a longhouse were discovered. A Viking stone had been erected not too far from our house by a son in memory of his father, a thousand years ago.
One could say that I lived with one leg in an ancient past, and one leg in our modern reality – an experience that would best be described as being dialed in to a dream-like radio station where the mumbling sounds you hear are understood more so emotionally, rather than intellectually. Images of a past reality I had never experienced myself would flood my inner world, and my way to integrate these experiences was through singing and artistic expression.
My creative process is intuitive and explorative. It can start with a feeling, a colour or a sound. I might follow a red thread and allow the image to develop organically around it. Storytelling is a fundamental part of my work and I sometimes work with a set palette over a period of time, to fully explore the mood I wish to convey as well as the potential of the series. The surface of the canvas also extends the meaning of the image, texture and layers creating a sense of agelessness and quiet beauty.
The themes that I am currently working on are drawn from various sources – ancient carvings and drawings, Scandinavian nature, symbols and memories. Regardless of the method I choose, I always feel a quality or a presence that is there to be given form, a collaboration between the unseen, the unknown and me."
